Hello, everyone. I am proud to be your 2008-2009 Little Miss Lumbee, Emily Drew Chavis! I am both honored and humbled to serve as a Lumbee Ambassador. It is my pledge, along with my parents, Kyle & Resia Chavis, that I will serve you with dignity, honor, and respect, and make you proud of the little girl from “Hogtown.”

My first few weeks of being Little Miss Lumbee have been so exciting! It has been a whirlwind, but I have enjoyed every minute of it. I attended my first powwow, began culture classes, and Lumbee Homecoming was a blast!

Thanks so much to all of my sponsors who made winning my title possible. I could not have done it without your support. Thanks also to Miss Amber Miller who made me look and feel like a princess on pageant night. Miss Jessica, thank you for choreographing my lyrical dance. I could not have won the Talent award without you. And to my Nana, who made my beautiful regalia…Nana, I wear it with pride. When I wear my regalia, I am not only reminded of my wonderful heritage, but I am also reminded of my wonderful family and how much you love me.

To the other newly-crowned ambassadors and their families, I am so happy to be on this journey with you. Miss Ashley, Page, & Kayla- we are going to have so much fun traveling and representing the Lumbee people this year. We have so much to experience, share and learn. We are a team now and I am excited to see what this year holds for us. I have already enjoyed getting to know you, hanging out, and acting silly. It’s going to be a great year!

Last, but not least, thank you to my family. Mom and Dad, thank you for teaching me that with Him all things are possible and that beauty comes from the inside. Nicholas, you are the best brother in the world. I love you! You know what we always say, “The Chavis Family is the best family in the world!” Aunt Leesha, thank you so much for everything. Brooke, Papa “Busy”, Aunt La-La, Uncle Gene, Kathryn, Caleb, Lizzie, Aunt Kim, Uncle Dennis, Aunt ‘Nita, Uncle Dickie - I love all of you! And to Papa Chavis, I know you’re looking down from Heaven and smiling.
